Good or Bad Anger? (James 1:20-21)

Part of the James series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

This Sunday morning we continue our verse by verse study in the epistle of James. I want to revisit 2 verses we looked at just briefly last Sunday. These two verses are just after the quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath passage (vs. 19). They are verses 20-21 which follow up on verse 19: “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” I believe we should spend a little more time here as James extends his speaking on the subject of anger.

Some questions we will want to answer from this passage: Is there a good anger? How is it different than evil anger, and what about resentment? Is that ok? Or is that a sin that verse 21 speaks about: “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness.” Now all these things need to be taken into consideration as we see how we ought to read and study, “and receive with meekness the engrafted word, (the Word of God) which is able to save your souls.”
