Pseudo-Faith (John 4:43-54)
Stephen Weaver, May 5, 2019Part of the Sunday Morning Service series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
This Sunday morning, we continue our series in the gospel of John. We will be looking at chapter 4 verses 43-54. In this passage Jesus returns to His Hometown; not expecting to be received and believed. This disbelief shows in Jesus rebuke to the official that comes for help for his son, and to the people of Cana. The people receive Jesus warmly as a miracle worker, but nothing else. They have no faith in the saving power of the Messiah. The official doesn’t believe at first either because all he was interested in was for Christ to do a miracle for his son. In grace Jesus heals the official’s son anyway and the official believes; and his faith is confirmed as he heads home to his son and his servants meet him. Is your faith real, like the official’s faith? Do you really believe in God or just a lot of nice things about God like the people did. We need to be challenged by this officials’ true faith.
